About the Spring Lake Bands
The Spring Lake Band Department was founded in 1959 by Harold Luoma. (for information on Mr. Luoma and a scholarship fund setup in his memory, please click here) Ever since that time, the Spring Lake Bands have been widely recognized for their level of excellence. The bands are under the direction of Mike Truszkowski and Mark Grevengoed. The program consists of Fifth Grade Beginning Band, Sixth Grade Band, Seventh and Eighth Grade Concert Bands and the Middle School Jazz Band. At the High School, the program entails the Laker Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Musical Pit Orchestra and various ensembles. The concert programs have all consistently received first division ratings at MSBOA band festivals, the Laker Marching Band has been competing in the Scholastic Marching Band circuit since 2005 and the Jazz Band has received many awards in the recent years.
We would love to have a more comprehensive history of the bands including past directors so if there are any alumni who want to contribute, drop us an email or click the heading above to leave a comment!
About the Spring Lake Schools
“Large Enough to Challenge, Small Enough to Care.”
Spring Lake Public Schools Website
The Spring Lake Public School District in Spring Lake, Michigan is located near the Lake Michigan Shore. It is a district of approximately 2400 students and consistently ranks near the top of schools not only in MIchigan, but in the entire United States. It has been awarded a Silver Medal by US News and World report for many consecutive years. More important than any of these rankings is the educational environment and pursuit of excellence that Spring Lake provides. As evidenced by the district motto, Spring Lake has the large size to offer a wide variety of opportunities, but yet is small enough that the teachers can really get to know the students and care for them as they learn.
