In November 2009, western Michigan lost one of the true master teachers of our time. Harold Luoma was a dedicated teacher of instrumental music in Spring Lake, Grand Haven, and at Muskegon Community College. Under his direction each program grew in quality and numbers. Harold started his teaching career in Spring Lake in 1950. As the Spring Lake district grew, there was a strong desire to expand the schools to include a High School. As early as 1966 the band was featured at the Midwest Band and Orchestra conference in Ann Arbor. The Spring Lake bands were consistent in receiving superior ratings at District and State competitions under his direction. In 1968, Harold left Spring Lake to build a music program at Muskegon Community College. Once again, he built an exceptional program academically and also in performing groups.
A scholarship trust fund has been established in Harold’s memory.
Donations to this trust will be used to further instrumental music education through private lesson scholarships for deserving Spring Lake band students. To donate to the trust fund, checks can be made out to Spring Lake Public Schools. Please be sure to indicate “Luoma Scholarship Trust” on the memo line of the check and send to:
